Community Blood Center
Effective August 22, 2016 all blood products collected throughout the Community Blood Center's service area will be tested for the Zika virus utilizing the FDA's approved investigational new methodology. This is a proactive measure by the Community Blood Center to help protect the community's blood supply.
Community Blood Center's top priority is to provide a safe and adequate blood supply. If testing reveals a unit of blood is reactive for the Zika virus, Community Blood Center will quarantine the unit, notify the donor and alert the Florida Department of Health, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control.
Community Blood Center, an affiliate of the NCH Healthcare System, supplies hospitals in Collier County with life-saving blood products. When a donor gives the gift of life at the Community Blood Center location in Naples or on the blue and white Community Blood Center bloodmobiles, he or she is helping to ensure adequate levels of blood products are available in area hospitals and ready for local patients, friends or family who suddenly need them. It is estimated that nine out of ten people who live to age 70 will require a blood transfusion.
