SeaCareium Inpatient Unit
The NCH Healthcare System’s Robert and MaryAnn McDonald “SeaCAREium” is designed especially for pediatric patients and their families. This 24 bed inpatient unit offers an entertaining underwater aquatic theme. This ocean reef provides a soothing backdrop for the dedicated team of healthcare professionals with extensive training in the care of infants, toddlers, adolescents and teens.
Staff – Board Certified Pediatric Intensivist’s Dr. D. Lopez M.D.and/or Dr. H. Dbouk M.D. give coverage to the pediatric unit on a 24/7 basis. The floor is also staffed with Rn’s specialized in the emotional and physical the care of pediatric patients. Ancillary staffs that include pediatric trained pharmacists, respiratory therapist, dieticians and physical therapists are regularly available based on patient needs.
Patient Rooms: Our bright, cheerful space provides all single-bed rooms for inpatients. The floor features 16 general pediatric beds, 4 progressive care beds and 4 intensive care beds. These large, ergonomic rooms include a full bathroom and child-friendly shower, and plenty of space for the patient's family members along with the health care team. We encourage at least one parent to stay with their child during the child’s hospital stay as we strongly promote family centered care.
State of the Art – The pediatric unit is equipped with a variety of state of the art technology and equipment to assist in the quality care of everyday tasks for even the sickest patients.
Treatment Room: To make a child feel safe during their stay, we try not to do any procedures — especially painful ones — in the room. Instead, this treatment room is used for procedures such as spinal taps and IV starts. Its dim lighting and entertaining artwork help provide distraction.
Nurses Station: Our nurses’ station is centrally located outside patient rooms for quick and easy access.
Lounge: A dedicated family lounge gives families a place to take a break. Often times, the cafeteria seems too far away for a parent, this space allows families to share a meal or have some quiet time while still remaining close to their sick child.
Play: An Art in Healing program providing emotional support to children and families along with an ocean themed playroom are also available in the pediatric unit as NCH continues to expand and develop services to keep children close to home and family.
