NCH Healthcare System Appoints New Medical Director

NCH Healthcare System—Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center

Specialist in Neurorehabilitation Joins the Program

Dr. Jackie Kawiecki will be joining the medical staff of the NCH Healthcare System starting in December, 2010. Her role will be as the medical director of the 60-bed rehabilitation hospital located at the Downtown campus.

Dr. Kawiecki is a graduate of the University of Minnesota—School of Medicine, and completed her chief residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM/R) at Fairview University Medical Center and a fellowship at the Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her credentials include dual board certifications in PM/R and spinal cord injury medicine, through the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Her practice concentration over the past six years has been in brain and spinal cord injury, neurorehabilitation, spasticity management and electrodiagnostics.

In addition to her esteemed patient care practice, Dr. Kawiecki has been active in research and is published on a variety of topics, including transitional rehabilitation, vision loss and spasticity management. She has been a sought after speaker at brain injury & spinal cord injury conferences.

Earlier in her educational course, she obtained a Masters in Healthcare Administration, and subsequently worked as a medical consultant for the Social Security Administration, Minnesota Department of Disability Services.

In planning for Dr. Kawiecki's arrival to the NCH rehabilitation hospital, the administrative team is setting the course to further develop neurological programming with a focus on stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury. Dr. Kawiecki said of joining the program, “I'm looking forward to joining NCH and strengthening current rehabilitation clinical practices, and broaden the scope of rehabilitation within the NCH Healthcare System.”

“We recently achieved a specialty accreditation in stroke rehabilitation, says administrator Heather Baker. As we start to work with Dr. Kawiecki, new opportunities for broadening patient access to recovery options will open up. It's a very exciting time in reconstituting the role of the rehabilitation hospital within the NCH Healthcare System, and for our community.”

As an acute care provider for inpatient rehabilitation, the facility provides rehabilitative services for patients recovering from an acute injury, such as a stroke or trauma, but also for patients with chronic debilitating conditions who want to regain their ability to lead a productive life. Over 1,000 patients are treated at the NCH rehabilitation facility every year.

NCH Healthcare System—Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center is a not-for-profit organization, operating at the Downtown campus. The rehab hospital is a 60-bed acute rehabilitation provider serving the community of Naples, and the surrounding region. Visit http://www.nchmd.org/ for more information.
