NCH Healthcare System Named Top Healthcare Provider

(Naples, Florida) The NCH Healthcare System announced it has received its eleventh quality award in the past two years. NCH has recently been recognized by the Premier Inc. healthcare alliance as a winner of the Premier Award for Quality in the area of Acute Myocardial Infarction.

NCH President, Allen Weiss, MD, along with Emergency Department and Cardiac Cath Lab staff accepted the award at the 2006 Premier Annual Breakthroughs Conference & Exhibition in Orlando. “As part of their ongoing efforts to help patients understand quality, Premier recognized three hospitals for objective measures of quality as being among the best in caring for patients with heart attacks. The NCH Save-A-Heart program that began 6 years ago, has been the cornerstone of this program that has conservatively saved dozens of our neighbors’ lives,” Weiss stated.

The NCH Healthcare System earned this quality award because it was rated as one of the three top hospitals for reducing cardiac mortality in the area of acute myocardial infarctions. Measurements show the hospital has one of the lowest rates of mortality in the nation in the area of acute myocardial infarctions.

“Receiving the Premier Award for Quality reinforces the fact that our employees and physicians are continuously striving to offer the highest quality of patient care on a daily basis, “said NCH Healthcare System Chief Executive Officer, Edward Morton. “The Premier Award is yet another much deserved and much appreciated national recognition for the life-saving outcomes provided by the NCH Shick Heart team,” Morton added.

Awarded in six clinical areas, the Premier Award for Quality is based on quality and cost data regularly submitted to Premier for reporting and benchmarking purposes. The award is distinguished by its consideration of performance-based criteria, including clinical quality outcomes, clinical process indicators and resource utilization outcomes.

“The Premier Award for Quality honors clinical excellence in both quality of care and operational efficiency, differentiating its winners as industry leaders that deliver outstanding patient care while reducing the cost of healthcare by improving resource utilization,” said Stephanie Alexander, senior vice president and general manager of Premier Healthcare Informatics.

Clinical areas considered for the 2006 Premier Award for Quality are Hip and/or Knee Replacement Procedures, Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), Heart Failure (HF), Pneumonia (PN), Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Maternal and Neonatal Care (Pregnancy).

Three winners were picked in each category for each hospital type from an eligible pool of nearly 400 Premier hospitals. Hospitals that submitted data to Premier’s Perspective clinical comparative database, the largest clinical comparative database in the nation, between October 2004 and September 2005, were eligible to receive the 2006 Premier Award for Quality.
