Welcome to the Shick Heart Center
Echocardiogram - This is an ultrasound of the heart. It will help to evaluate how the heart muscle and heart valves are functioning. Gel and a small probe are used on the chest wall to assist in the transmission of a sonographic image of the heart (pictured below). It is sometimes necessary for the technician to use a special lipid based contrast to assist in providing your physician with a clear picture of your heart.
If this is necessary, the contrast will be injected into a vein in your hand or lower arm. Generally, minimal or no preparation is necessary for this procedure.
