Straight TalkA weekly update from management on the issues that matter most. Jan 24, 2019 For eighteen years, first as President starting in 2000 and subsequently as President and CEO in 2006, I have had the pleasure, honor, and privilege of leading a team of over five thousand dedicated professionals at NCH. I am sharing some thoughts as I begin a new chapter in my life. NCH’s accomplishments are in many ways remarkable and certainly were not anticipated when I transitioned from a twenty-three-year successful private practice in Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Geriatrics to administration. My first presentation to the NCH Board focused on quality, operational efficiency, and fiscal responsibility. As I look at NCH’s current state, I congratulate NCH on having CMS’s 5 star status, U.S. News and World Report’s “Best in the Region” and 11th in Florida, and Moody’s “A1” along with Fitch’s “AA” ratings. Our community is the healthiest and happiest metropolitan statistical area for three consecutive years as ranked by Gallup-Sharecare, with a growing life expectancy that is six years longer than the average—the longest in America. As the result of teamwork, competence, compassion, and enduring patient-centered care, we have had an amazing run with all of our projects, some of which are: Save-a-Heart Program Save-a-Brain Program Reduced cardiac and stroke mortality System-wide computerization, recognized as top with HIMSS and Most Wired Award many times Hospitalists starting in 2000 Sale of Diagnostic Services Incorporated Outsourcing ER management to TEAM HEALTH Building North Naples Tower Preventing the sale of NCH to HMA Starting the NCH Heart Institute Starting the NCH Physicians Group Mayo Clinic Affiliation, 1st in FL & 7th in the nation Birth Place—doubled in size Palliative Care Service Fortress balance sheet Clean annual financial audits Blue Zones Project Renovated North Naples ER New Robert, Mariann, and Megan Pediatrics ER, Pediatrics Unit, and Peds surgery Renovated Neonatal ICU & on-site neonatologists Two free standing ERs—Northeast and Bonita Leadership roles at FHA and AHA Graduate Medical Education affiliated with Mayo Five new cath labs 22-bed new ICU on Baker Campus Renovated peri-operative area and ORs on Baker Safe & Healthy Children’s Coalition Briggs Wellness Center Brookdale Center for Rehab and Aging Geriatric Consultative Service Always open during man-made and natural disasters Joint Commission in- and out-patient validation I extend sincere gratitude to the thousands of dedicated NCH nurses, care-givers, support staff, medical staff, Board members, and other colleagues with whom I have worked. The above accomplishments are credits to these incredible people who have the grit, determination, and focus on what is best for the residents of our diverse county. I have often shared, “When you do the right thing often enough, you get the right result.” NCH is at an all-time high. As I close this last Straight Talk, my fondest hope for NCH, our community, and those I have helped to serve is longer, happier, and healthier lives for all.
